| Qualities of a Southern Gentleman: By J. Michael Kelly, Esq. a. Able: having necessary power, skill, resources, or qualifications; showing talent skill, or knowledge. b. Ancestors: a person or people who serve as an influence or model for another; one from whom mental, artistic, spiritual, etc., decent is claimed. c. Bravery: brave spirit or conduct; courage; valor; fearlessness. d. Confederacy: an alliance between persons, parties, states etc., for some purpose; also a combination of persons for unlawful purposes; conspiracy. e. Courage: the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery; also having the courage of one's convictions; to act in accordance with ones beliefs despite criticism. f. Dignity: the bearing, conduct, or speech indicative of self-respect or appreciation of the formality or gravity of a situation; nobility; worthiness. g. Duty: something that one is expected or required to do by moral or legal obligation; the binding or obligatory force; also an expression of respect due a parent, superior, or elder. h. Family: a group of persons who form a household under one head, including parents, children and servants; considered a group, whether dwelling together or not. i. Friendship: a friendly relation or intimacy; friendly feeling or disposition; the state of being a friend. j. Habit: an acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary. k. History: a continuous, systematic narrative of past events as relating to a particular people, country, period, person, etc.; acts, ideas, or events that will or can shape the events of the future. l. Honor: honesty, fairness, or integrity in ones beliefs and actions; a source of credit or distinction; high public esteem; fame; glory. m. Individualism: a social theory advocating the liberty, rights, and independent action of the individual. n. Loyalty: faithfulness to commitments or obligations; faithful adherence to a sovereign, leader, government, or cause. o. Old: of or pertaining to the latter part of the life or term of existence of a person or thing; far advanced in the years of ones life; belonging to the past; experienced. p. Patience: the quality of bearing provocation, annoyance, misfortune, or pain, without complaint, loss of temper, irritation, or the like; an ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay; quiet, steady perseverance; even-tempered care; diligence. q. Prepared: properly expectant, organized, or equipped; ready. r. Pride: a becoming or dignified sense of what is due to oneself or ones position; self-respect; self-esteem; a high opinion of ones own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority, whether as cherished in the mind or as displayed in bearing and conduct. s. Responsibility: reliability or dependability. t. Ritual: a prescribed or established rite, ceremony, proceeding, or service, especially religious; a system or collection of religious or other rites. u. Self-confidence: realistic confidence in ones own judgement, ability, and power. v. Self-reliance: relying on oneself or on ones own powers, resources, etc. w. Southern: of or pertaining to the South of the United Stated; south of the Mason-Dixon Line. x. Standards: something considered by an authority or by general consent as a basis of comparison; an approved model. y. States Rights: the rights belonging to the various states, esp. with reference to the strict interpretation of the Constitution, by which all rights not delegated by the Constitution to the federal government belong to the states. z. Tradition: the handing down of statements, beliefs, legends, customs, information, etc., from generation to generation, esp. by word of mouth or by practice.
